Alpine Loop
In the late 1800’s, pioneers in search of gold, silver, lead and zinc carved a network of roads through the spectacular peaks and valleys of the San Juan Mountains.
Today, the Alpine Loop Back Country Byway is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service and is part of the National Scenic Byway System. The route connects the historic mining towns of Ouray, Silverton and Lake City and gives the adventurer privileged views of leftover structures, mines and ghost towns, as well as several 14,000 ft. plus mountain peaks. There are streams and high lakes for fishermen and plenty of hiking trails. |
