Crazy Horse Memorial

Increasingly ranked among the modern wonders of the world, Crazy Horse will tower 563’ high, 641’ long and be carved three dimensionally in the round. This overall project exemplifies one of the most impressive works of art in progress that a person will ever see.

The Memorial has been underway since 1948 when sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski (1908-1982) came to the Black Hills to accept the invitation of Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear. Requesting a Native American Memorial, he wrote, “My fellow chiefs and I would like the white man to know the red man has great heroes, also.” The Indians chose Crazy Horse to be carved on the mountain.
