De Smet

De Smet, the “Little Town On The Prairie” was made famous by author Laura Ingalls Wilder and her pioneer adventure books. A must see on your visit to De Smet is the Ingalls Homestead. Take a covered wagon ride to school and learn about what school was like back then. You can also see the five cottonwood trees planted by Pa.

There are many recreational facilities in De Smet including a nine-hole golf course, tennis court, athletic park, city park and snowmobile trails in De Smet Forest. De Smet is near the largest natural lake in South Dakota. The hunting and fishing in this area are a sportsman’s dream.
